Summary:

Police today launched a hate crime probe after literature saying those who insult Islam “must be killed” was allegedly handed out at a London mosque. A Standard investigation has uncovered claims that the booklet, which says “any Muslim should kill” those who insult the Prophet Mohammed, was distributed at a gathering in Walthamstow. It points to a classical manual of Islamic law to justify killings without waiting for court judgments and says apostates “deserve to be assassinated”.

Summary:

Dr. Eric Ormsby, a Professor of Islamic Studies at McGill University wrote a book review of Feisal Abdul Rauf's "What's Right with Islam," which appeared in the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday, August 4, 2004.

Ormsby's review displays the two overlapping tiers of apologetics which pervade contemporary print media presentations of Islam, distorting or fully concealing basic historical realities. The treacly apologism of Feisal Abdul Rauf and his ilk persuades only those who are devoid of any understanding of Islamic theology and history; however, the faint-hearted "critique" of Abdul Rauf provided by Professor Ormsby, is more damaging, because in the end, it serves only to further obfuscate the truth. I will support this contention by elaborating on four specific points Ormsby addresses in his review.

Summary:

‘They recorded themselves. They did a sort of sermon around the altar, in Arabic. It’s a horror,’ she told BMF television. It was an Islamic sacrificial offering to Allah. Such a sacrificial system is part and parcel of Islam itself where Islamic history shares the story of Jaad bin Durham when Al-Kasri slaughtered him in the mosque on the Sacrifical Day 119 A.H. This set the precedent that using a human being as The Festival of Sacrifice is permissible is Islam. This is supported by several of the top most forceful theologians during the history of Islam like Al-Shafi’, Ibin Tayymiya, Bukhari, Dhahabi, Ibin Al-Qiyam, Darami and Ibin Katheer.

Threatened with sanctions for refusing to accept the compulsory migrant quotas being imposed on European Union member-states by Brussels, the Hungarian government has declared that Islam and Europe “are incapable of coexisting without conflict”. Zoltán Balog, the Central European country’s Minister for Human Capacities, branded the European Commission which leads the bloc as “helpless, bewildered and weak” in the face of the migrant crisis. Mr. Balog added the bloc was incapable of providing a solution and resentful of the fact that Hungary, Poland, and now the Czech Republic, have found one in the form of robust border controls.

The Norwegian government on Monday proposed a bill to ban the full-face Muslim veil in all schools, from nurseries to universities, saying it hinders communication between students and teachers. Norway’s ruling coalition of conservative and anti-immigration rightwing parties had promised the ban last year, targeting the full-face veil called the niqab as well as burqas, balaclavas and masks. “We do not want clothes covering the face in nurseries, schools and universities,” Minister of Education and Research Torbjorn Roe Isaksen said in a statement.

INTRODUCTION

Umdat as-Salik wa ‘Uddat an-Nasik (Reliance of the Traveller and Tools of the Worshipper, also commonly known by its shorter title Reliance of the Traveller) is a classical manual of fiqh for the Shafi’i school of Islamic jurisprudence. Yes, Traveller with two Ls. The author of the main text is Ahmad ibn Naqib al-Misri, who based his work on the previous Shafi’i works of Imam Nawawi and Imam Abu Ishaq as-Shirazi. This work consists of the soundest positions of the Shafi’i school.

The book was translated by the American Muslim scholar Shaykh Nuh Ha Mim Keller in 1991 and became the first translation of a standard Islamic legal reference in a European language to be certified by the University of Al-Azhar, Cairo, the Muslim world’s oldest institution of higher learning. (See photo above re certification of Al-Azhar)

The Shāfi‘ī school is followed throughout the Ummah and is the official school of thought of most traditional scholars and leading Sunni authorities. It is also recognized as the official school of thought by the governments of Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia. In addition, the government of Indonesia uses this madhab/mazhab for the Indonesian compilation of sharia law.

It is the dominant school of thought of Palestinian TerritoriesUnited Arab EmiratesChechnyaKurdistanEgyptDjiboutiEritreaSomaliaSudanMaldivesSingaporeMalaysiaBrunei Darussalam and Indonesia.

It is also practised by large communities in Islamic Republic of Pakistan, KuwaitSaudi Arabia (in the Hejaz and Asir), Israel, the Swahili CoastMauritiusSouth AfricaThailandVietnamCambodia, the PhilippinesSri LankaEthiopiaKazakhstan (by Chechens) and Indian States of Kerala(most of the Mappilas), Karnataka (BhatkalMangalore and Coorg districts) , Maharashtra (by Konkani Muslims) and Tamil Nadu. The purpose of this blog is to show to Muslims and non-Muslims alike what sharia law has been like for the past 1400 years. Since it is immutable, it is also what we can expect to be applied in years to come.

Not many Muslims know the laws they have unwittingly subscribed to and certainly not many non-Muslims are aware of them. Especially with so many conflicting claims in the media and among society in general as to what sharia actually is, we hope we can enlighten them both.  This is not an academic exercise, just an attempt to share the truth.

In this sharia manual (r14.0 p 751), the prophet of Islam himself declared that explaining the Koran/Qur’an by personal opinion is ‘in error.’ Also … ‘as for would be exegets who do not know the dimensions of Arabic, the figurative, literal and the types of metaphor, it is not permissible for them to explain it beyond what they have heard, by way of reporting and not actual interpretation .. whoever does not know which verses abrogate others and which are abrogated …  is not safe from error if he interprets the Quran …’

That is exactly what we are trying to do here. Not giving out personal opinions, but merely showing what sharia law actually says.

This Reliance is not the only handbook of Islamic law, though it is the most popular. Others are generally less detailed in some matters. Al-Hedaya is not as easy to read but it explains the differences between Shafi’ite and Hanifi fiqh.

Summary:

The United Kingdom is on taking a first step toward a parallel legal system for Muslims, and garnering applause for it.

Both the Guardian and the Telegraph have recently lauded a new Muslim marriage contract drawn up by a group of British Muslim organizations as a breakthrough in Muslim women's rights in the UK. Urmee Khan of the Telegraph announced with unabashed aplomb: "Hailed as the biggest change in Sharia law in Britain for 100 years, a married Muslim couple will now have equal rights." And the Guardian's Samia Rahman claimed that "A new Islamic marriage contract sets aside cultural practices, giving women the rights they are due under sharia law".

But if this new marriage contract was required to give Muslim women equal rights, how can these rights have already been enshrined in the shari'a? There are two important claims to distinguish here: that the shari'a gives women equal rights in marriage and divorce matters, and that this new contract is consistent with the shari'a in giving women these rights. But how valid are these bold assertions?

  • None of the French organizations supposedly combating anti-Semitism talks about Muslim anti-Semitism: therefore, none of them combats it.

  • A survey carried out for the Institut Montaigne a few months ago showed that anti-Semitism is widespread among French Muslims. Apparently, 27% of them (50% of those under 25 years old) support the ideas of the Islamic State (ISIS).

  • "We need urgent, wholesale reform of human rights laws in this country to make sure they cannot be twisted to serve the interests of those who would harm our society." — UK Justice Secretary, Chris Grayling, January 2015.

  • Swedish intelligence deemed him too dangerous to stay in Sweden, so the immigration authorities sought to have him deported to Syria. They did not succeed: the law does not permit his deportation to Syria, as he risks being arrested or executed there. Instead, he was released and is freely walking around in Malmö.

  • "It would simply never in a million years have occurred to the authors of the original Convention on Human Rights that it would one day end up in some form being used as a justification to stay here by individuals who are a danger to our country and our way of life..." — UK Justice Secretary, Chris Grayling, January 2015.
